Samson Anyenini and OneGhana Movement renew calls for compensation for June 3 victims

Samson Lardy Anyenini and the OneGhana Movement are pushing for compensation. This is for victims of the June 3, 2015 disaster in Ghana.

The tragedy happened when heavy rains caused flooding at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra. The floodwaters mixed with leaking fuel from a nearby GOIL petrol station. This led to a catastrophic explosion that killed over 150 people and injured many more.

The OneGhana Movement, led by Senyo Hosi, has held annual commemorations. They have also started legal proceedings to seek justice and financial support for the victims.

On Channel One TV, Anyenini reiterated their demand for GH¢ 42 million in compensation. He noted that many survivors still need medical treatment after ten years.

Anyenini explained that the government initially covered medical bills and funeral costs. However, no further compensation has been provided despite ongoing hardships faced by survivors.

He stated, “We are in court because the victims—154 identified dead and 154 seriously injured—still suffer permanent disfigurements.” Many survivors cannot work or care for themselves due to their injuries.

When they sought assistance, they faced resistance from the state after initial payments were made.

Anyenini criticized the government's failure to act on recommendations from a 2015 disaster committee report. He questioned which parts of the report have been implemented by authorities.

“The report contains solutions to prevent such tragedies,” he said. “I doubt any measures have been fully adopted.”

The lawsuit targets several entities including the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). It also includes Thompson Obeng Anane, manager of the GOIL station, GOIL itself, and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
