Samuel Lomotey sentenced for stealing corn mill

Court Gavel

Samuel Lomotey, unemployed, has been sentenced to prison. He was convicted for stealing a corn mill, unlawful entry, and causing damage. The Circuit Court in Accra made this decision. Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah presided over the case.

Lomotey pleaded guilty to the charges. He received three months for theft and six months for unlawful entry. Additionally, he must pay a fine of 100 penalty units (GH¢1,200) for unlawful entry. If he does not pay the fine, he faces six months in prison. He also needs to compensate Juliana Odai with GH¢5,000.

The total sentence is 15 months; however, Lomotey will serve a maximum of six months. This is because the sentences will run concurrently. The court delivered the sentence on April 24, 2025.

A second accused person remains at large. Samuel Larbi, also known as Abaacha, is a corn mill operator. Lomotey had previously been remanded after failing to appear in court on March 1, 2025.

He later appeared on April 3, 2025. He requested that the bench warrant be rescinded. Lomotey claimed he had not been informed about the proceedings.

During the trial, Chief Inspector Daniel Appiah-Ofori provided details of the crime. On August 4, 2024, around 4:00 am, Lomotey allegedly broke into Odai's corn mill shop in Nungua Maami. He damaged a burglar-proof barrier worth GH¢200 before entering unlawfully.

Lomotey stole a corn mill motor valued at GH¢10,000. He sold it to a scrap dealer for GH¢650. Investigations revealed that Larbi informed Lomotey about the equipment and proposed the theft. Larbi promised Lomotey a share of the proceeds to fund his trip home.
