Police in Pakistan have arrested many people recently. This follows over 10 mob attacks on KFC outlets. The attacks were fueled by anti-U.S. sentiment and opposition to Israel's actions in Gaza.
Officials reported at least 11 incidents of vandalism at KFC locations. Major cities affected include Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. At least 178 individuals have been arrested so far.
KFC and its parent company, Yum Brands, did not comment on the situation. A police official revealed that one KFC employee was shot dead near Lahore. The motive for the killing is still under investigation.
In Lahore, police are increasing security at 27 KFC outlets. This comes after two attacks occurred and five others were stopped. Senior police officer Faisal Kamran stated they are investigating various individuals and groups involved.
Eleven people have been arrested in Lahore, including a member of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). However, Kamran noted that TLP did not officially organize these protests. TLP spokesman Rehan Mohsin Khan clarified that the group called for a boycott of Israeli products but did not endorse protests against KFC.
KFC has long been seen as a symbol of the U.S. in Pakistan. It has faced backlash during previous anti-American sentiments as well. Recently, Western brands have experienced boycotts due to Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
The conflict began with Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in over 1,200 deaths and numerous hostages taken to Gaza. Since then, local health authorities report more than 51,000 Palestinian deaths from the Israeli offensive.
Yum Brands mentioned that Pizza Hut has also suffered from boycotts related to this conflict. In Pakistan's cola market, local brands are gaining popularity as consumers avoid U.S.-based products. Coca-Cola's market share dropped from 6.3% to 5.7% this year.
Earlier this month, religious clerics urged a boycott of products supporting Israel or the U.S., while promoting peaceful actions without property damage.
