Many supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). They came in response to the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO operatives. This happened shortly after he left the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra. He had been questioned about illegal mining activities. These included operating in forest reserves without permission.
His arrest led to a quick reaction from party supporters. They assembled at EOCO’s headquarters to show their support. Among them were senior officials like NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua and National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye.
Currently, Chairman Wontumi is being interrogated by EOCO officials. It is unclear how long this questioning will last. It is also uncertain if he will be released or detained overnight.
Reports from JoyNews’ Latif Iddrisu indicate that at least four armed EOCO officers are stationed at the gate. They are preventing supporters from entering the premises as events unfold. The specific reasons for EOCO’s actions have not been disclosed.
