Isaac Boamah Nyarko, the MP for Effia, wants the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat dissolved. He believes it no longer serves scholarship beneficiaries effectively.
On May 20, he spoke on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV. He claimed the Secretariat has failed in its duties. Nyarko suggested replacing it with a decentralized structure focused on fairness and accountability.
He stated, “We do not need a scholarship secretariat to run scholarships.” He proposed managing scholarships at local or regional levels instead. This would remove political influences and create offices in those areas.
His remarks follow complaints from Ghanaian students abroad. They are demanding overdue stipends and allowances from the Secretariat.
The Coalition of Ghanaian Scholars Abroad plans a demonstration on June 4, 2025. They describe their situation as government neglect.
Students have gone 14 months without monthly stipends. Additionally, book and health allowances have been unpaid for two academic years.
In a joint statement on May 19, representatives from Europe, North America, and Asia expressed their frustrations. They accused the government of ignoring their appeals for help.
The planned protest aims to peacefully highlight their struggles and demand accountability from authorities.
