Security has been increased at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. This follows the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Wontumi was re-arrested by EOCO officials on Tuesday, May 27. This happened right after he attended questioning by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). The details of the investigation are not public.
His arrest led to a quick response from NPP supporters. Many party members and regional executives gathered at the EOCO compound to show support. They chanted slogans and demanded Wontumi’s release, creating a tense atmosphere.
In reaction, EOCO called in military personnel for added security. Armed officers were stationed at key entry points and patrolled the area to prevent escalation.
Tensions rose when two police pickup trucks arrived. Angry supporters surrounded the vehicles, banging on them in protest. The police remained calm and eventually moved the trucks away from the crowd.
This incident adds to rising political tensions within the NPP. The party described Wontumi's arrest as a "rambo-style" tactic meant to intimidate its members.
NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua criticized EOCO’s actions earlier. He urged state institutions to follow due process and avoid politically motivated actions.
As of Tuesday evening, Wontumi was still in EOCO custody. Officials have not released a formal statement about his re-arrest yet. Legal analysts believe it may relate to money laundering allegations linked to illegal mining activities.
