The Mayor of Accra, Michael Allotey, has made an important announcement. All items confiscated during the decongestion exercise will be donated to the Ghana Prisons Service.
He spoke to journalists on Tuesday, May 20, after the first day of the operation. Mr. Allotey stated that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will stop auctioning seized items. This practice had been in place for years.
“Tomorrow, you will not see it this way,” he said. “I will pack all these things for the prison when I come tomorrow.” He warned traders who had encroached on public spaces.
The decongestion campaign started with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). It aims to reclaim key areas from unlawful trading activities and improve sanitation.
Day 1 targeted congestion hotspots like Kinbu Road and Opera Square. These areas are known for unauthorized street vending and traffic issues.
Mayor Allotey emphasized that the AMA will continue this effort until order is restored in the capital. “This exercise is not a nine-day wonder,” he said. “We will be on the streets until we ensure that roads are clear.”
The AMA has urged street traders and commuters to cooperate with the taskforce. This cooperation is essential for a smooth and peaceful operation.
