Senior University Staff unions call off indefinite strike after government yields to demands

The Senior Staff Association of Ghana has suspended its indefinite strike. This decision follows the government's positive response to their demands.

The strike began on May 21. It was in response to a six-month delay in improving conditions of service. The unions accused both current and previous governments of not honoring their agreement.

George Ansong, the National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association, explained that they exhausted all other options before striking. He described the decision as “difficult but necessary.” He cited “persistent inaction” by the government as a reason for their action.

On May 22, Mr. Ansong announced the suspension of the strike. The union noted that the government responded positively to their concerns.

The Ministry of Finance has released a letter authorizing implementation of the agreement. This will take effect on November 1, 2024. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has also approved immediate payments by universities.

“Due to the government's goodwill, we announce that all members should resume work on Friday, May 23,” said the unions. They expressed gratitude to the Minister of Education and Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai for their help.

They also thanked the media and their members for their support during this time.
