Seth Acheampong appeals to TTH doctors to call off strike

Former Eastern Regional Minister Seth Acheampong has made an appeal. He urged striking doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) to return to work. He warned that their absence could endanger lives.

The Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) suspended services on April 23. They took this action in response to “unwarranted attacks” by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and MP Alhassan Suhuyini. These comments were made during a recent ministerial visit.

Earlier, President John Dramani Mahama dismissed the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku. This followed reports of negligence linked to a patient’s death in the Accident and Emergency Ward. The president's decision caused mixed reactions and increased tensions in Northern Region healthcare.

On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on April 24, Acheampong acknowledged the doctors' concerns. However, he urged them to prioritize patient lives. “I will appeal to the medical practitioners who have gone on strike,” he said.

Acheampong emphasized that this issue is administrative. He believes it can be resolved through dialogue rather than actions that risk lives. “If there are matters that need discussion, I know the president will address them,” he added.
