Heavy rain on Sunday, May 18, 2025, flooded parts of Accra, Ghana.
Videos from New Legon, Lakeside, Pokuase, and Kasoa show residents stranded. Many had to spend the night standing as properties were lost.
The recurring floods have sparked discussions about government inaction. People are frustrated with the lack of effort to clear waterways.
Chief Disaster Control Officer Mohammed Jafaro spoke about the situation. He reported receiving many distress calls but confirmed no casualties.
“We’ve heard from residents in Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie,” Jafaro said on Channel One Newsroom. “That’s why we dispatched teams for assistance.”
He noted several issues contributing to the flooding. There is a lack of drainage in some communities. Some areas are also filled with debris and have engineering defects.
