Sextortion, online blackmail surge in Ghana with nearly GH¢500k in losses

Financial losses from online blackmail and sextortion scams in Ghana have reached GH¢499,044. This amount was recorded in just the first four months of 2025.

These figures come from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA). The losses show a nearly fivefold increase from GH¢103,663 last year. This highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in the country.

The CSA's latest report noted an increase in reported cases. Between January and April 2025, there were more incidents than in 2024. The number surpassed 155 cases documented during the same period last year.

The rise in financial losses is due to more calculated tactics by scammers. They often use secure messaging apps to carry out their schemes.

Typically, scams start with fake social media accounts. These accounts feature attractive profile photos to lure victims into romantic conversations. Once trust is built, fraudsters manipulate victims into sharing intimate content.

They then threaten to release this material unless a ransom is paid, usually via mobile money. However, sending money rarely ends the threats. The CSA warns that victims often continue to receive threats even after paying.

Cybercriminals frequently move conversations to encrypted platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram. This makes it harder for authorities to trace them.

The CSA advises the public to stay cautious online. Avoid engaging with unfamiliar profiles and never share sensitive content digitally. Report any suspicious behavior using their 24-hour cybersecurity support services.
