Dr. Gideon Boako, the MP for Tano North, has criticized the government's decision to raise utility prices.
He questioned the promised reduction in the cost of living. He noted that after three months in office, utilities are increasing.
In a social media post, he expressed confusion over why the NDC continues to burden Ghanaians with higher utility costs and poor services.
He compared utility price increases under the two major political parties. He highlighted that the NPP manages utilities better than the NDC.
His post included data on electricity tariff changes from 2009 to 2024. Both parties faced IMF programs during their terms.
Under NDC:
- 2009 – no increase
- 2010 – 89% increase
- 2011 – 10% increase
- 2012 – 7.42% increase
- 2013 – 58.9% increase
- 2014 – 28.35% increase
- 2015 – 90.93% increase
- 2016 – 10% increase
Under NPP:
- 2017 – no increase
- 2018 – 17.5% reduction
- 2019 – 17.46% increase
- 2020 – no increase
- 2021 – no increase
- 2022 – no increase
- 2023 – 51.02% increase
- 2024 – 6.47% increase
From 2009 to 2016, the NDC raised electricity tariffs by a total of 294.6%. This averages to 36.8% per year over eight years.
In contrast, the NPP increased tariffs by 57.45%, averaging 7.2%.
During the NDC's time in office, electricity prices soared while Ghanaians faced frequent power outages (dumsor).
Under President Nana Addo and Vice President Bawumia, tariff increases were minimal and power supply was steady.
Now, within four months of taking office, the current NDC government has raised electricity tariffs by 14.75%.
Boako emphasized that this should not be blamed on IMF programs since both parties experienced them but managed differently.
