Ship carrying activists, aid to Gaza attacked by drones, NGO says

A ship carrying humanitarian aid and activists was bombed by drones. This incident occurred in international waters off Malta early on Friday. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an NGO, reported the attack. They shared video footage showing a fire on one of their ships. However, they did not identify who was responsible for the bombing.

There is no immediate information about any injuries. The NGO stated that the drone attack targeted the ship's generator. The vessel is now at risk of sinking with 30 human rights activists on board. The ship sent out an SOS distress call after being hit 17 nautical miles east of Malta. Cyprus responded by sending a vessel to assist.

The coalition aims to end Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The Gaza war began after Hamas fighters killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages on October 7, 2023. Since then, Israeli offensives have resulted in over 52,000 Palestinian deaths, according to health officials.

In 2010, another coalition ship on a similar mission was stopped by Israeli troops. Nine activists died during that incident. Other ships have also been stopped and boarded without loss of life.
