Six convicted in GES payroll scandal; over GHS 106,000 recovered

The High Court in Tamale has convicted six people. They were involved in a payroll corruption scheme at the Ghana Education Service (GES). This scheme led to illegal salary payments for a non-existent employee.

The convictions came through the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) plea bargaining framework. The individuals pleaded guilty and agreed to return the stolen funds.

The convicted included school administrators, payroll officers, and accountants. They illegally validated salary payments for a teacher who had left his job. Their actions caused wrongful payments exceeding GHS 86,000.

With additional funds recovered, the total amount retrieved is now GHS 106,319.64. The OSP stated that this case is part of a larger investigation into payroll irregularities.

Several other suspects are being pursued for similar offences. The OSP is also prosecuting six more criminal cases in Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi. This effort aims to combat corruption and protect public funds.

The office remains committed to holding public officials accountable. It seeks to restore integrity in managing state resources.
