Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has spoken out. This is his first public statement since his arraignment related to the Sky Train project. He declared his innocence and thanked everyone for their support.
In a personal statement released on May 30, he confirmed that he pleaded not guilty to all charges. He emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability. "I welcome the opportunity to clear my name," he said, expressing confidence in his innocence.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi served as Minister of Education under President John Agyekum Kufuor. He is among former GIIF officials facing prosecution over the failed $2.3 billion Sky Train project. This initiative began in 2019 to modernize Ghana’s urban transport system but was suspended due to procurement issues and financial concerns.
He described the time after his arraignment as “challenging.” However, he felt deeply moved by the support he received from others. He expressed gratitude to family, friends, and legal counsel for their unwavering support during this difficult period.
"Their encouragement has strengthened my resolve," he stated. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi also acknowledged help from key political figures. He specifically thanked former Assin Central MP Hon. Kennedy Agyapong for showing “Santaclausian brotherliness.”
He praised Techiman South MP Hon. Martin Kwaku Agyei Mensah Korsah for exemplifying strong family ties through his support. Both men are known allies within the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi remains a respected elder in the party.
