Solomon Asamoah, the former CEO of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), remains in custody. He is the first accused in the Sky Train case. Asamoah failed to meet bail conditions set a week ago.
He is on trial with Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chair of GIIF. They face charges of causing financial loss to the state and misusing public funds. They are accused of transferring $2 million from GIIF accounts to Africa Investor Holdings without proper authorization.
Prosecutors claim no work was done to justify this payment. During his initial court appearance on May 13, Asamoah pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail set at GH¢15 million, requiring two sureties with landed property in Accra.
On May 20, it was revealed that Asamoah had not met these bail conditions. Therefore, he remains in custody. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was absent again due to medical reasons.
His lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, informed the court that he was hospitalized early Tuesday morning. Justice Comfort Tasiame expressed concern about Ameyaw-Akumfi's recurring medical issues coinciding with court dates.
Sasu assured the court that his client would be available for arraignment on Friday. The Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, acknowledged the judge's concerns regarding Ameyaw-Akumfi’s absences. The prosecution may reconsider its approach at the next hearing.
The case has been adjourned to Monday, May 26, at 10:00 a.m.
