Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has been granted bail. The bail is set at GH₵10 million with two sureties. These sureties must provide landed properties located in Accra.
This decision came after his legal team made a strong bail application. The proceedings took place at the High Court in Accra on Monday, May 26.
The 80-year-old professor faces four charges related to the Sky Train project. This project involved a $2 million payment for an urban rail system that was never built. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including causing financial loss to the state and misusing public funds.
As part of his bail conditions, Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi must deposit his travel documents with the court registry. This includes his passport. He is also required to report to the police once a week until further notice.
Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe presided over the case and adjourned it to June 10 at 10:00 am. During this session, a case management conference will take place. The court will set timelines for pre-trial processes and determine how the trial will proceed.
This ruling provides temporary relief for the former minister. His legal team highlighted his age, health issues, and long service to Ghana as reasons for granting bail. They assured the court that he would comply fully with all conditions.
The first accused person is Mr. Solomon Asamoah, former CEO of GIIF. He was also granted bail and is complying with court orders.
The Sky Train case has generated significant public interest due to its implications for procurement and accountability in Ghana's infrastructure financing. The upcoming case management session aims to clarify evidentiary issues and outline the trial's direction.
