President Nana Akufo-Addo, in his final State of the Nation Address on January 3, 2025, claimed credit for resolving Ghana’s energy crisis, known as "dumsor," inherited from the Mahama administration.
He highlighted increased electricity access, rising from 79.3% in 2017 to 88.85%, and advancements in renewable energy projects, including solar PV installations at Bui and Kaleo.
Akufo-Addo noted his government tackled a $2.5 billion energy sector debt that could have ballooned to $12.5 billion without intervention, avoiding a return to power outages.
While some citizens acknowledged the improvements, others argued the crisis was largely resolved before his tenure.
Nevertheless, Akufo-Addo declared, “I leave office in 2025 with the lights on,” emphasizing reliable electricity as a legacy of his administration.
