Soldier In Court Over Alleged GH¢723k Recruitment Scam

Dansoman Circuit Court

A 38-year-old soldier, Staff Sergeant Clement Ayomah, appeared in court. He is accused of defrauding 75 people of GH¢723,000.00. Ayomah allegedly promised to help them join various security services in Ghana.

Currently, he is in custody of the Ghana Military Police. He pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud. This is under Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Dressed in military camouflage, Ayomah denied the allegations before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit. The prosecution is led by Chief Inspector Wonder.

In September 2021, Ayomah approached Police Officer Gilbert Gli from Techiman MTTD. He claimed he could help recruit individuals into security services. Gli gathered 75 interested persons who paid him money for this service.

Ayomah received the full payment but did not fulfill his promise. He failed to secure enlistment for any of the individuals involved. After repeated demands, he refunded GH¢155,000.00 but still owes over GH¢568,000.00.

Gli then filed a complaint with the Accra Regional CID. This led to Ayomah’s arrest by the Military Police Command.

In court, Ayomah's lawyer requested bail. They argued that he is not a flight risk and is a witness in an ongoing Court Marshal case at Burma Camp set for April 11, 2025.

The court heard that Ayomah will testify against another person involved in this case. The prosecution did not oppose the bail request.

The judge granted bail set at GH¢600,000.00 with three sureties required. One surety must provide title deeds equal to the bail amount.

The judge ordered that Ayomah remain with military police until bail conditions are met. The case has been adjourned to May 28, 2025.
