A Ghanaian soldier is cycling 250 kilometers in one day. He will ride from Accra to Kumasi. This endurance event aims to advocate for cyclist safety in Ghana.
Captain Festus Yeboah Asuamah is a cyclist himself. He believes this ride promotes sustainable cycling in the country. “This ride is more than just a test of endurance,” he said. “It’s a call for safer roads for all.”
The ride starts in Accra and ends in Kumasi. It aims to raise awareness about how cyclists are often disrespected by motorists. This disrespect leads to many avoidable accidents.
Captain Asuamah's initiative was inspired by Akpene Adzo Ahadzie. She was a sixth-year Master of Architecture student at KNUST. Tragically, she died last year after being hit by a vehicle while cycling on campus.
Her death raised concerns about road safety for cyclists and motorists alike. Many questioned the disregard shown towards cyclists on the roads.
This initiative also aligns with the World Health Organisation's call for cyclist safety. The WHO emphasizes that cyclist safety should be central to road transport policies.
Captain Asuamah urges all Ghanaians, especially cyclists, to support his mission. He wants to spread awareness and push for better infrastructure and policies that protect cyclists in Ghana.
