Soldiers deployed to EOCO as tensions mount over Wontumi’s arrest

Security has been tightened at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This follows the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Wontumi was arrested after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for an investigation. His arrest led to a strong reaction from party members. Large crowds of NPP supporters gathered at EOCO headquarters in Accra. They demanded clarity and access to their colleague.

The atmosphere became tense, prompting military personnel to be deployed. They were there to maintain order and prevent escalation. As of Tuesday evening, EOCO had not disclosed why Wontumi was detained. This lack of information has fueled speculation within political circles.

In response, NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, expressed outrage. He criticized EOCO for denying party executives access to Wontumi. He called this treatment unjust and politically motivated harassment. “Denying access to our own Regional Chairman raises serious concerns,” he said.

Nana Boakye added that they would not tolerate political intimidation disguised as law enforcement. The incident has increased partisan tensions ahead of upcoming elections. Meanwhile, EOCO has not issued a public statement about the investigation involving Wontumi.
