Solving Clinker Poser: IGP Escapes Sniper’s Bullets @ Bawku

IGP Yohuno Meets Bawku Naba

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, narrowly escaped harm on April 11, 2025. An unidentified gunman shot at his official vehicle after he visited the Bawku Naba's Palace.

The motive for this brazen attack is unclear. It highlights security challenges faced by citizens and officials alike. A reliable source in Bawku reported that the incident happened just 30 seconds after the IGP entered his Land Cruiser.

Mr. Yohuno visited to apologize to the chiefs and people of Bawku on behalf of the Ghana Police Service. The Overlord of Bawku was reportedly upset about the shooting incident after the IGP left the palace. His guards identified the shooter, who was then punished with horsetail whips before being released.

Later, a delegation of twelve chiefs met with IGP Yohuno at a local police barracks. They apologized for the incident on behalf of their community. Despite this attack, Mr. Yohuno remained unshaken and went to Vineyard Hospital to support those injured in recent disturbances.

He paid their medical bills and later spoke to the media. He urged young people in conflict-prone areas to join recruitment processes for police service. The IGP assured them they could apply if they met requirements.

He noted that regional balance in recruitment is difficult due to centralization in major cities like Accra and Kumasi. He wants opportunities for applicants from all regions, including remote areas.

The ongoing conflict between two ethnic groups escalated recently over market usage by Kusaug people. Clashes with police resulted in several deaths, including an opinion leader.

Angry mobs retaliated by burning police barracks, vehicles, and homes of local leaders like ACP Adamu Seidu and MP Mahama Ayariga.

In related news, Kofi Bentil from IMANI Africa expressed doubt about Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's ability to mediate effectively in Bawku's crisis. He stated that military intervention may be necessary as policing alone won't suffice.

Bentil warned that elements from Agbogbloshie, Burkina Faso, and Northern Nigeria might exploit Bawku’s unrest if not controlled. Security Analyst Col Festus Aboagye (rtd) also commented on the situation’s volatility since February 2023 when a new Bawku Naba was enskinned.

He believes government support for one faction has hindered peace efforts significantly. Regarding the attack on Mr. Yohuno's vehicle, he questioned why a non-armored car was used in such a dangerous area.

Aboagye suggested deploying five armored cars retrieved from former military chiefs instead of using them only in cities.
