Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo is calling for a review of Ghana’s mining agreements. She is a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
Justice Akuffo believes these agreements are outdated. They resemble colonial-era deals that favor foreign companies. As a result, Ghana receives minimal profits from its resources.
At a recent press conference, she discussed maximizing benefits from natural resources. She emphasized the need for policy reforms to create local value. These changes could drive economic transformation in Ghana.
Akuffo suggested forming a small committee of five experts. This group would review and recommend amendments to natural resource laws. Their goal would be to optimize benefits for the country.
She also proposed changes to the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703). These amendments would give local governments more control over mineral resources. District Assemblies should be directly involved in managing these resources.
