South African Airways (SAA) plans to launch direct flights from Accra to the United States by the end of 2026. This is part of its West African expansion strategy.
The announcement was made by CEO Professor John Lamola during a dinner in Accra on April 8. He highlighted that Accra is a key hub for SAA in West Africa.
“We are looking at starting a route between Ghana and Cape Town,” he said. He also mentioned using Accra as a connector to U.S. east coast cities.
Launching a new route takes time due to regulatory processes. The biggest challenge for SAA, like other airlines, is aircraft availability after COVID-19.
“As soon as we get aircraft, we will start flying to the U.S. east coast from Accra,” he stated. This will increase flights between Johannesburg and Accra to daily service.
Prof. Lamola has already discussed enhancing connectivity with Ghana’s Minister for Transport.
He emphasized that SAA is becoming a revitalized and financially stable airline.
“We have restructured SAA to be financially sustainable,” he noted. He also mentioned the airline's strong safety record and its goal to be a leading global brand.
Additionally, he praised Ghana’s rich political and cultural heritage. He expressed gratitude for the admiration Ghanaians receive in South Africa.
