South African Airways (SAA) plans to launch direct flights from Accra to the United States by the end of 2026. This is part of its West African expansion strategy.
The announcement was made by CEO Professor John Lamola. He spoke during a dinner with Ghana’s travel trade and media in Accra on April 8.
Professor Lamola highlighted that Accra is a key hub for SAA in West Africa. He mentioned evaluating a route between Ghana and Cape Town. He also noted using Accra as a connector to U.S. east coast cities.
Launching a new route takes time due to regulatory processes. The biggest challenge for SAA is access to aircraft after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As soon as we get aircraft, we will start flying to the U.S. east coast from Accra,” he said. This will increase SAA's flights between Johannesburg and Accra to daily service.
He has already discussed enhancing connectivity with Ghana’s Minister for Transport.
Professor Lamola emphasized that SAA is becoming a financially stable national carrier. “We have restructured South African Airways for financial sustainability,” he stated.
He highlighted SAA's safety record and mission to reclaim its global brand status. He also praised Ghana’s rich political and cultural heritage, noting Ghanaians are well-regarded in South Africa.
