The Spanish naval warship Relámpago visited the Sekondi Naval Base in Ghana. This stopover aimed to strengthen maritime security and cooperation between Ghana and Spain. The visit occurred on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, Ángel Lossada, also visited the Western Regional Coordinating Council. He emphasized the need for global cooperation to address international challenges. “We are neighbors with shared borders and problems,” he stated.
Lossada noted that today’s world is interconnected. Countries must work together on issues like security and climate change. He added that military presence supports mutual safety for both nations.
The deployment of Relámpago is part of Spain’s initiative for West African maritime security. The Spanish Navy has also sent the patrol warship ESPS Meteoro to assist in this effort.
Key objectives of Relámpago's mission include:
- Enhancing maritime security by boosting surveillance and deterring piracy.
- Providing technical assistance and training to strengthen the Ghana Navy.
- Promoting collaboration between Spanish and Ghanaian naval forces.
- Addressing security needs related to the Petroleum Hub Project in Jomoro.
During the visit, Ambassador Lossada met with Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, along with the ship's captain and crew members. The Ambassador reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s security initiatives.
Minister Nelson expressed gratitude for Spain's long-standing partnership with Ghana. He highlighted benefits such as scholarships for students at Takoradi Technical University and naval training support.
“The Western Region values these contributions,” he said. “Maritime security is a top priority with our Naval Command here.”
The delegation also visited Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area, at his palace. The day ended with a guided tour of the Relámpago warship attended by regional officials and security personnel.
