Speaker of Ninth Parliament to be elected Jan. 5

Ghana’s Members of Parliament will convene on January 5, 2025, to elect the Speaker of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin explained that the Presidential Transition Act mandates this timeline to prevent delays experienced during the 2021 speaker election, which disrupted the presidential inauguration.

The two-day gap ensures the newly elected Speaker is sworn in on January 7 before the inauguration proceedings. Bagbin highlighted this during parliamentary deliberations on the Business Statement for the week ending January 20.

This adjustment aims to streamline the transition process and avoid the logistical challenges of past inaugurations, ensuring smoother parliamentary and presidential ceremonies.
