Speaker orders investigation into market fire outbreaks

The Speaker of Parliament has directed a joint committee to investigate recent market fires. This includes the committees on Defence and Interior, as well as Local Government. They must report back urgently.

This directive comes after a devastating fire in Adum. The fire caused millions of Ghana cedis in property loss.

Kofi Obiri Yeboah, the MP for Subin, raised this issue in Parliament. He expressed deep concern for affected traders and called for immediate government support.

He spoke with traders and eyewitnesses about the fire's cause. They claimed it was triggered by dumsor. When power was restored, it sparked the fire. Yeboah noted this situation is unfortunate for the nation.

He urged the government and international community to help rebuild businesses and livelihoods.

In response, the Speaker tasked the joint committee with examining fire causes. They will focus on markets like Kantamanto, Asafo, and Kejetia.

The committee must determine causes and recommend solutions to Parliament. They should submit their report during the first week of the next meeting.

Additionally, victims of the Adum fire will receive GHs600k in immediate support.
