Spending $58m on National Cathedral contributed to our defeat – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the 2024 Flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He believes the party lost the election due to two main issues. These are the National Cathedral project controversy and a late fuel price increase.

Dr. Bawumia spoke in Takoradi during his nationwide Thank You Tour. He addressed reports from the Mike Oquaye Committee about his perceived religious "flirting." He dismissed these claims, focusing instead on economic and governance problems.

He highlighted that the unfinished National Cathedral project cost $58 million in public funds. This situation eroded public trust and increased voter dissatisfaction.

Dr. Bawumia also mentioned that fuel prices rose just three days before the election. This angered drivers and turned voters against the NPP. He insisted that religion or tribal affiliations were not responsible for their loss.

His comments come as internal party discussions intensify about the election outcome. Many stakeholders want a thorough review to help reposition the NPP for future elections. Dr. Bawumia expressed relief that no religious or tribal factors contributed to their defeat.
