Sports and tourism must work together to boost development - Ahafo NSA Director

Festus Boafah is the Ahafo Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA). He has called on the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and other tourism stakeholders to include sports in their marketing efforts. This inclusion can help boost tourism for economic and cultural development.

In an interview with JoyNews, he spoke at Goaso. The occasion marked the 2025 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP). He urged the GTA to involve both retired and active sports legends in tourism promotion.

The IDSDP is celebrated annually on April 6. It highlights how sports can drive social change and community development. The United Nations General Assembly established it on August 23, 2013, with support from the International Olympic Committee.

Mr. Boafah encouraged the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to develop lesser-known sports. These include basketball, volleyball, hockey, badminton, tennis, golf, swimming, sprinting, boxing, wrestling, taekwondo, surfing, rowing, and diving. He believes this will enhance sports tourism alongside football.

He emphasized that state institutions should collaborate to host regional and international events. Events like marathons and cycling can attract visitors and boost the local economy. They also enhance global visibility for Ghana.

The Regional Director pointed out the need for special sporting facilities. Scenic golf courses and hockey pitches are examples he mentioned. Facilities for athletes and a football stadium are also essential to attract visitors.

He suggested combining sporting activities with accommodation options and local tours. This would create attractive packages for tourists. Mr. Boafah stressed using social media to showcase sports facilities globally.

He highlighted integrating local culture into sports tourism initiatives as vital. Eco-friendly practices can also benefit local communities while attracting travelers.

Mr. Boafah proposed creating sports museums across various facilities in Ghana. These museums could celebrate the achievements of Ghana's sports heroes to draw visitors.

Finally, he urged authorities to embrace this year's theme: "Leveling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion." Investing in sectors like electronic or adventure sports could attract younger audiences and diversify patrons.
