Squatters defy eviction at Neoplan Bus stop, prompting fresh AMA action

Squatters evicted from the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange Neoplan Bus Stop returned quickly. This happened less than 24 hours after a major cleanup by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). Their return defies city authorities and has prompted further action.

The AMA had cleared the bus stop to reclaim pedestrian walkways and transit points. However, hawkers and squatters have come back with their goods.

Mr. Joseph Asitanga, an Environmental Health Officer at AMA, expressed frustration over this situation. He confirmed that the assembly is responding swiftly to address it.

He stated, “We follow up after our decongestion exercises. Bus stops are for passengers only.” He noted that it is challenging to remove people from these areas.

Upon learning of the squatters' return, his team revisited the location. They found new setups with items displayed for sale and took action to clean up again.

The AMA insists that the Neoplan Bus Stop must remain clear for public transport use. Mr. Asitanga emphasized, “This is not a market; it’s a bus stop.”

To improve enforcement, three permanent guards will be deployed at the bus stop. This decision comes from the director through the National Security Coordinator.

Asitanga said, “We will ensure this area remains clean.” He added that no trading will be allowed at this bus stop. The goal is to keep it free of vendors while maintaining its intended purpose.
