State Institutions to prioritise local procurement under new government directive – Ato Forson

**Government to Enforce Local Procurement Policy – Ato Forson**

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced a new policy. This policy will require public sector agencies to buy essential goods from local producers.

This initiative aims to strengthen Ghana’s industrial base. It also seeks to reduce reliance on imports and create jobs.

Dr. Forson made the announcement during a meeting with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI). He expressed concern about Ghana's dependence on imports for basic items like sugar and rice.

He emphasized that the directive will empower domestic manufacturers. The government plans to publish a list of items for local procurement soon.

Any procurement from outside Ghana will need special approval from the President's Office.

In addition, Dr. Forson warned about the threat of smuggling goods into the country. The government has identified key smuggling routes and will enforce strict measures against it.

“Smuggled goods are crippling our local businesses,” he stated. “We are determined to stop it.”

Dr. Forson called for closer collaboration between the government and private sector leaders. He invited industry leaders to discuss how they can engage with the government's 24-hour economy program.

He stressed that strong partnerships are vital for long-term growth and production capacity.

AGI President, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, welcomed this move. He praised the government's commitment to industrial development.

He is optimistic that ongoing dialogue between government and businesses will lead to improvements. The new local procurement policy could boost competitiveness among Ghanaian manufacturers while benefiting the national economy directly.
