Key members of the Minority support repealing the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy).
Former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Stephen Amoah spoke in Parliament on Wednesday. He backed a report by Finance Committee Chairman Isaac Adongo. The report recommended repealing the tax.
The E-Levy Repeal Bill is now at the consideration stage. This is an important step toward removing it from Ghana’s tax system.
Some lawmakers and economic analysts believe removing the E-Levy will ease financial burdens on Ghanaians. Others warn it may lead to revenue losses for the government.
Dr. Amoah's support was echoed by NPP MP Bryan Acheampong, a former Food and Agriculture Minister.
The E-Levy was introduced in 2022. It taxed mobile money and electronic transactions, which many citizens and businesses disliked.
Parliament will continue discussions before making a final decision on the levy’s fate.
This move aligns with President John Mahama's early promises to the country.
