Stop Mahama from ousting CJ – Minority to Chiefs, Clergy

The Minority in Parliament is urging Ghana’s religious and traditional leaders to counsel President John Dramani Mahama to suspend ongoing processes aimed at removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

At an emergency press conference held on Wednesday, April 16, the Minority's Legal Counsel and Suame MP, John Darko, argued that the petitions filed against the Chief Justice are without merit and fall short of constitutional standards.

“To our revered traditional leaders and religious leaders, the time to call the President to advise him is now, the time to pray for our country is now. We should not wait until it’s too late,” Darko appealed.

He expressed concern that accepting what he described as "frivolous petitions" could set a dangerous precedent and weaken Ghana’s democratic foundations.

“How can any serious country, mindful of its past, and desirous of improving its democratic credentials entertain such loose petitions and orchestrate the destruction of the last bastion of our democracy?” he asked.

The call adds to the growing national debate around the attempt to remove the Chief Justice and its broader implications for judicial independence and constitutional governance.
