Stop building on waterways to avoid havoc - President Mahama

President John Mahama has urged the public to stop building on waterways. This is to prevent disasters like flooding.

He spoke during the Eid al-Fitr ceremony at Black Star Square in Accra on March 31. Mahama called on Ghanaians to protect the environment and lives.

He described illegal construction on waterways as "deeply troubling." He noted that this issue is common in urban areas.

Mahama said, "People have built and blocked the rivers." He warned that this causes flooding and property destruction.

He added, "This reckless disregard for planning regulations contributes to devastating floods."

His call comes as flooding threatens various parts of Ghana, especially Accra.

Mahama mentioned some traditional leaders allow private individuals to build on waterways. This is often done for self-interest.

Flooding has been a recurring problem in Ghana. Accra faces severe floods due to encroachment on waterways and poor drainage systems.

Rapid urbanization and uncontrolled construction block natural water flow. This leads to flash floods during the rainy season.

In June 2015, Accra experienced a devastating flood and fire disaster. Over 150 lives were lost, and thousands were displaced. The Odaw River overflowed partly due to illegal construction along its banks.

The President's warning highlights the need for sustainable development practices. There is an urgent need to improve infrastructure, including drainage systems.

He stated, "Let's be clear, this must stop." He insisted that illegal structures should be removed.

Mahama emphasized that selfish actions endanger many lives and livelihoods. The law will be enforced against those who violate it.
