In many parts of Ghana, people commonly pay for public washrooms. Fees can be GH¢2, GH¢1, or sometimes GH¢0.50.
This practice has spread to health facilities as well. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has noticed this issue. They issued a circular to all regional directors about it.
The circular is dated April 16, 2025. It is signed by Prof Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the acting Director General of GHS. Regional Directors were asked to stop charging fees immediately.
The GHS warned that facility heads who do not comply will face sanctions. They emphasized that washrooms are essential for patient and visitor comfort.
Washrooms should not be used for profit-making purposes. They must remain clean and comfortable to prevent infections and improve patient care quality.
Regional Directors must ensure compliance with this directive right away. Facility heads need to be informed about these requirements for strict adherence.
