Stop illegal mining or spend 10 years in jail – Bono Regional Minister cautions

Bono Regional Minister Joseph Addae Akwaboa has issued a warning to illegal miners. He urged them to stop their activities or face at least 10 years in prison.

Akwaboa spoke during the confirmation ceremony for Peter Dongi as District Chief Executive for Banda. He emphasized the government's strong stance against illegal mining, known as galamsey. Anyone caught engaging in this activity will be fully prosecuted.

“Our forefathers safeguarded these resources for us,” he said. “We must protect them for future generations.” The Minister stressed the need for collective action against illegal mining.

He noted the environmental and economic damage caused by these activities. Akwaboa warned that those involved would face severe consequences if caught.

He highlighted the harm illegal mining is causing to national infrastructure, especially the Bui Generating Station. Urgent action is needed to protect such assets.

Akwaboa urged the newly confirmed DCE to collaborate with Assembly Members on this issue. He called for community involvement from traditional leaders and residents to preserve natural resources.

He also encouraged unemployed youth to explore job creation initiatives under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. Akwaboa urged them to seek sustainable and lawful livelihoods instead of illegal mining.
