The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has urged Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to stop blaming workers. They want him to focus on fixing the serious issues in public healthcare.
GMA General Secretary Dr. Richard Selormey spoke with JoyNews. He said blaming frontline workers for systemic failures is not helpful.
His comments came after a senior colleague faced "demeaning and unacceptable treatment" from the Minister at Tamale Teaching Hospital. This incident led to the dismissal of the hospital's CEO.
As a result, doctors at the hospital have suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely.
Dr. Selormey supported this decision, highlighting the frustrations of health professionals working under tough conditions.
He mentioned that some doctors use their own money for essential supplies, which is unacceptable. “We need to stop scapegoating and gaslighting frontline workers,” he said.
Dr. Selormey criticized the Minister’s confrontational approach. He believes such matters should be handled respectfully and privately.
Junior doctors are worried about their future after witnessing their senior's public humiliation. “Disciplinary issues can be handled in private,” he argued.
He emphasized that health workers cannot perform miracles without essential equipment. “If a ventilator is unavailable, pressure on staff won’t help,” he noted.
Dr. Selormey called on the government to focus on solutions instead of blame. “Let’s identify systemic problems and work together,” he urged.
Health professionals are giving their all but need support, not scapegoating, he added.
Meanwhile, the Health Minister has asked medical staff at Tamale Teaching Hospital to end their strike. He wants them to return to negotiations for patients' sake and the healthcare system as a whole.
