Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, MP for Walewale, criticized Energy Minister John Jinapor. He accused Jinapor of using fear tactics during the energy crisis.
Mahama spoke on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on May 17. He described the minister's actions as “scaremongering.” He urged Jinapor to inspire hope and provide real solutions.
“Since he took office, it has been one alarm after another,” Mahama said. He believes this approach allows Jinapor to award contracts without proper procurement processes.
Mahama claimed over GH₵200 million in sole-sourcing has occurred improperly. He urged the minister to stop scaring people and instead promote hope.
The energy sector faces serious challenges. The Ministry of Energy needs GH₵1.1 billion urgently for liquid fuel purchases. Current reserves are expected to last only 2.6 days.
Additionally, there is a GH₵2 billion monthly deficit in the sector. This deficit is mainly due to revenue collection issues at the Electricity Company of Ghana.
Mahama expressed frustration with Jinapor's approach, which creates panic rather than confidence. He called for constructive leadership focused on restoring stability and trust in the energy sector.
