The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has warned against negative stereotypes of Zongo communities in Ghana. He called this trend unjust and harmful to national unity.
During a meeting with Zongo Chiefs on April 30, 2025, he condemned the idea that these communities promote violence. “We cannot accept the view that Zongo areas recruit violent youth,” he said. He urged people to discourage such stereotyping of these diverse and densely populated regions.
Mr. Nelson stated that every community in Ghana contributes to national development. He emphasized that Zongo communities have produced many professionals, including doctors and leaders. “These areas have given us capable individuals who help build our nation,” he added.
The Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving deprived areas, including Zongo communities. He mentioned initiatives by President John Dramani Mahama aimed at changing negative perceptions.
He highlighted reduced Hajj fares and an extra public holiday during Eid as examples of government support for Muslim communities. Mr. Nelson encouraged traditional leaders to make informed decisions for their people's welfare.
He also called for unity and peace across Zongo communities and the Western Region.
Alhaji Ahmed Osman Maiwada Masala II, the Takoradi Zongo Chief, expressed readiness to work with the government for peace in these areas.
He appealed to the Minister to address drug infiltration in Zongo communities. This issue threatens the lives and futures of young people.
“We want peace and unity but need government support against drug barons,” he stated.
