Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, announced a crackdown on street begging in Accra. This effort is just the start of a nationwide initiative across Ghana.
In an update on Facebook, Muntaka shared details about a recent operation. The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) arrested 2,241 foreign nationals involved in organized begging. This operation took place early on May 16, 2025, targeting hotspots in Accra.
Among those arrested were 909 adults and 1,332 children. The gender breakdown included 961 males and 1,280 females. Muntaka emphasized that this operation aims to restore public order and enhance national security.
He praised GIS personnel for their dedication to national security. He noted public calls for similar actions in cities like Kumasi and Tamale. "This is a nationwide exercise," he assured the public.
The Minister urged communities to cooperate as operations expand beyond Accra. He asked Ghanaians to support efforts to keep streets safe and orderly. “I count on your continued cooperation,” he said, encouraging unity with authorities.
