Street begging crackdown to extend beyond Accra – Muntaka

Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, announced a crackdown on street begging in Accra. This is just the start of a nationwide effort across Ghana.

In an update on Facebook, he shared details about a recent operation. The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) arrested 2,241 foreign nationals involved in organized begging. This operation took place early on Friday, May 16, 2025, in key hotspots of Accra.

The arrests included 909 adults and 1,332 children. Among those arrested were 961 males and 1,280 females. Muntaka emphasized that this initiative aims to restore public order and enhance national security.

He praised GIS personnel for their dedication to national security. He noted public calls for similar actions in cities like Kumasi and Tamale. “This is a nationwide exercise,” he assured the public.

Muntaka urged communities to support the effort as it expands beyond Accra. He asked for cooperation from all Ghanaians to help keep streets safe and orderly. “I count on your continued support when operations reach your communities,” he said.
