Strict policies needed to tackle harassment and bullying at work – Psychiatrist

Dr. Robert Assuah, a psychiatrist at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, has called for better workplace policies. These policies should address harassment, bullying, and mental health challenges faced by employees.

Speaking on Joy News AM Show today, Dr. Assuah stressed the need for guidelines to support employee mental health. He said every workplace must have structures to handle harassment—be it sexual, verbal, or emotional. Employees need to feel safe and protected in their work environment.

A supportive and respectful workplace is essential for well-being and productivity. Organizations should prioritize creating such environments.

Dr. Assuah also discussed the negative effects of toxic leadership on employees' performance. He noted that some managers instill fear in their staff. Just seeing a manager's name can cause panic among employees.

He explained that this fear makes communication difficult, even when there’s no wrongdoing involved. Such an atmosphere can severely impact mental health.

Additionally, Dr. Assuah highlighted financial stress as a significant factor affecting employees' mental health. He stated that low salaries can create overwhelming situations at home.

“It’s not always about conflict at work,” he said. “Sometimes you’re working full-time but still struggle to pay school fees.” This kind of financial pressure also affects mental well-being.

In conclusion, Dr. Assuah urged employers to take a comprehensive approach to employee wellbeing. He emphasized that caring for employees benefits the business as well.

“It’s not just about productivity,” he said. “Policies, empathy, and fair salaries are crucial for positive mental health at work.”
