George Kwame Aboagye is the Member of Parliament for Asene Akroso Manso. He has called for stricter penalties against theft of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at ports.
Aboagye believes harsher consequences will deter theft and promote responsibility. He spoke to MyNewsGh.com reporter Hajia Asana Gordon about this serious issue. He emphasized the need for immediate action and long-term reforms.
He stated, “Better security, stronger internal controls, and collaboration with law enforcement can help.” Aboagye also urged Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to ensure accountability in ongoing investigations.
He said responsible parties must be held accountable if negligence or fraud is found. This includes individuals within ECG, port officials, or businesses involved.
Mr. Aboagye called for better coordination between port authorities and law enforcement. He suggested forming an ad hoc parliamentary committee to investigate the missing containers.
He noted that 1,328 ECG containers have disappeared, raising regulatory and security concerns. This indicates a failure in the security departments and government agencies at the ports.
To resolve these issues, he stressed the need for immediate corrective measures and long-term strategies to improve oversight and security at Ghana’s ports.
