The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) continues its strike. They will not stop until they receive legal notice.
The GRNMA has not received any injunction notice from the court or the National Labour Commission (NLC). The NLC secured an injunction to stop the ongoing strike.
On June 5, 2025, the High Court ruled in favor of the injunction. The NLC declared the GRNMA's industrial action illegal and ordered them to end it immediately.
In a statement to Citi News on June 6, a GRNMA representative said, “They think that they should serve us a letter; we can’t prevent them.” They questioned what makes a strike illegal. They noted that they informed the NLC about their intended strike.
The representative added, “We respect the court and the NLC very much. But we haven’t received any letter.” They emphasized that none of their executives have been served any notice. Until then, they will continue their strike.
The health workers began their strike on June 2, 2025. They are protesting against the government's failure to implement an agreement made with the previous administration.
Their grievances include unpaid allowances for responsibility, uniforms, and other essential payments. These amounts total millions of cedis owed over time.
Additionally, over 5,000 newly qualified nurses and midwives are still waiting for official postings since late 2024.
Meanwhile, the NLC's injunction aims to force GRNMA's 128,000 members back to work. The ongoing strike has severely impacted patients with serious medical conditions.
