Strike galore: More senior university staff to stop work from September 27

Senior Administrators at Technical Universities to Strike from September 27

The Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) will strike on September 27, 2024. The union claims the government has not fulfilled its obligations under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

TUSAAG joins other groups, including the University Senior Staff and Colleges of Education Teachers Association, in striking. They plan to withdraw all services across technical universities until their demands are met. The union expressed frustration over the lack of dialogue and failure to honor terms of service.

TUSAAG also stated that the government has not implemented revised allowances for senior members. This directive was issued by the Ministry of Finance in May 2024. The union believes this violates their members' rights.

Additionally, TUSAAG accused the government of systemic discrimination against them. They claim other unions receive preferential treatment regarding common allowances. TUSAAG cannot accept working conditions that compromise fairness and equity.

Meanwhile, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has threatened another strike for unpaid allowances. CETAG stated that the government has failed to honor previous agreements about these payments.

In related news, the University of Ghana has postponed its academic year start date due to ongoing strikes by tertiary workers. The university announced it cannot begin the 2024/2025 academic year as planned under current circumstances. However, this postponement will only affect regular programs and not special ones.

Last year, during a similar strike, first-year lectures were moved online at the University of Ghana.
