The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is on strike. They believe this is the only way to get the government to act. Their conditions of service have been delayed for a long time.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has urged the nurses to stop striking. He wants them to return to negotiations. However, GRNMA's Public Relations Officer, Joseph Krampah, disagrees.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, he explained their position. The 2024 Collective Agreement has already been signed and needs implementation. He stated that they will not engage in new discussions.
Krampah emphasized that their strike is necessary for change. He said it is their only tool to make the employer listen. They have followed due process in taking this action.
The GRNMA's strike aims to implement the 2024 Collective Agreement. This includes unpaid allowances and delayed postings for nurses. The strike has significantly affected healthcare services across Ghana.
The agreement also covers a 13th-month salary and various allowances. These include fuel, medical, rural incentive allowances, and uniforms for health workers.
