Structures on Weija, Dansoman Ramsar sites to be demolished today

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) will begin a demolition today. This action targets unauthorized structures on the Weija and Dansoman Ramsar sites.

This effort is part of a government plan to restore protected lands. It aims to reduce flooding in the capital city.

President John Dramani Mahama recently inspected Ramsar sites and flood-prone areas. He directed that all encroachments on these lands would be addressed immediately.

During the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration, President Mahama expressed concern about illegal developments. He noted that such activities worsen urban flooding and damage property during rainy seasons.

He warned against illegal construction on waterways and protected areas. The government is committed to enforcing planning regulations.

The President emphasized the importance of preserving natural drainage paths. This preservation is crucial to prevent severe flooding that affects communities.

Regional Minister Linda Ocloo will lead security personnel in the demolition operation.

The initiative aims to dismantle unauthorized structures and rehabilitate Ramsar lands. It seeks to restore natural watercourses and improve the city's flood resilience.
