Ebbo Botwe, President of the Plastic Manufacturers Association of Ghana, has called for proper consultation. He believes this is necessary before banning Styrofoam imports and production nationwide.
His comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement to eliminate Styrofoam. The President cited environmental concerns as the reason for this decision.
In an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on June 5, Mr. Botwe addressed misconceptions about Styrofoam. He explained that it contains only 4% to 5% plastic; the rest is air.
“Let me clear up some misconceptions,” he said. “Styrofoam mainly consists of air and becomes an eyesore.”
Botwe acknowledged that Styrofoam creates visible waste challenges. However, he emphasized its impact is more aesthetic than chemical. He stressed the need for informed policies regarding the plastic industry.
“We have a meeting with the Minister for Environment between June 16 and 20,” he noted. “We want to provide a proper overview of our industry.”
President Mahama made his announcement during the launch of a tree planting exercise on June 5. He reiterated the government's commitment to combat climate change and restore forests.
The President stated that Styrofoam is a major pollutant due to its non-biodegradable nature. He urged swift adoption of eco-friendly alternatives to protect the environment.
However, industry stakeholders are pushing back against this ban. It seems Ghana's fight against plastics will require more than just policy changes; it needs broader dialogue with manufacturers.
