Suale’s Murder Suspect Refused Bail Again

The Late Ahmed Suale

The High Court in Accra has denied bail for Daniel Owusu Koranteng. He is accused of being involved in the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale. Justice Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie presided over the case.

Defense lawyer Nathaniel Egbor, along with Esi Ama Jane, argued for bail. They claimed that the facts do not support a murder charge. The court ordered Koranteng to remain in prison until further notice.

Egbor filed the bail application on March 26, 2025. He supported it with an affidavit on April 4, 2025. His arguments included four main points:

1. The facts do not support the murder charge.
2. The accused deserves a presumption of innocence.
3. His continued detention violates his right to liberty.
4. He meets the requirements for bail.

Egbor challenged the prosecution's case, stating there was no direct evidence linking Koranteng to the murder. He also noted there was no proof of intent to harm, which is crucial for a murder charge.

He disputed claims that Koranteng fled justice by citing travel records and correspondence with law enforcement from 2019 to 2025.

Prosecutors opposed the bail application, led by Maame Afua Osei Gyamerah. They referenced Article 14(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution, allowing lawful detention based on reasonable suspicion.

Gyamerah stated that police investigations are ongoing and new evidence has emerged. This includes call records placing Koranteng near Suale’s residence before his murder.

She told the court that “the charge sheet shows reasonable suspicion.” Gyamerah added that seeking concrete evidence now is premature since investigations are still progressing.

Justice Quarshie agreed with the prosecution's argument. She noted that they had sufficient time to respond to the supplementary affidavit.

In her ruling, she decided it was inappropriate to grant bail at this stage. She ordered Koranteng to remain in custody until further direction from the court.

Ahmed Suale was an undercover journalist with Tiger Eye PI. He was shot and killed in January 2019, sparking national and international outrage.

His image had been circulated online before his death, raising public interest in the case. The decision to remand Koranteng highlights how seriously this matter is being treated.

The case will return to court in upcoming weeks as police continue their investigations.
